The book "Yishu" was first published in the 13th year of the Daoguang era; it was republished in the 17th year of the Guangxu era. In 1959, the Anhui People's Publishing House released a thread-bound edition on Song Dynasty Xuan paper. In 1983, the Anhui Science and Technology Publishing House published a popular edition. "Yishu" consists of sixteen volumes, written by Cheng Wenyuan of She County. Its contents include: Volumes 1 and 2 on the origins of medicine, Volume 3 on the discussion of cold-damage disease, Volume 4 on the analysis of cold-damage disease, Volumes 5 to 12 on miscellaneous syndromes, Volume 13 on the principles of gynecology, Volume 14 on pediatrics, Volume 15 on the essence of smallpox, and Volume 16 on the preparation of prescriptions. Wenyuan, also known as Xingxuan and Guanyuan, was a renowned physician during the Qianlong, Jiaqing, and Daoguang periods of the Qing Dynasty. The title "Yishu" reflects the idea of narrating without creating. Wenyuan, overwhelmed by the vast number of medical texts and the difficulty for scholars to read them all, spent decades compiling over 300 books, from the "Lingshu" and "Suwen" to modern experts, integrating various theories and personal insights, and organizing them into a coherent whole. This compilation allows readers to save the effort of browsing numerous books and achieve the effect of extracting the essence and applying it broadly.
