This book consists of 2 volumes and is a medical history work written by Zhou Shouzhong (Rong'an) of the Southern Song Dynasty. The book spans from ancient times to the Song Dynasty, compiling the deeds of famous physicians and medical anecdotes recorded in historical and literary texts as well as medical books throughout the ages. It is presented in rhymed verse, with each couplet consisting of four characters, and annotations are added below each couplet to indicate the source of the material. It serves as a valuable reference for understanding the development of medical history in China. For example, the first couplet of the book is "Shennong's hundred herbs, Fuxi's nine needles." The former is based on the Shiji which records that Emperor Yan Shennongshi "first tasted the hundred herbs, thus initiating medicine"; the latter is sourced from the Diwang Shiji which describes Fuxi's "creation of nine needles to save lives from premature death." This format allows readers to easily memorize the rhymed verses and gain a deeper understanding of the deeds of famous physicians through the annotations, hence the title Lidai Mingyi Mengqiu.
