bubble_chart Description This book is a specialized monograph on throat diseases, written by Zheng Mei-jian during the Qianlong era. Zheng Mei-jian compiled Zhonglou Yuyao based on his family's collection and personal experience. The manuscript was later copied and circulated, eventually reaching Tianjin, where it was finally published in the 18th year of the Daoguang era (1838) by Feng Xiang and others. His son, Cheng Han (also known as Han, courtesy name Kuxi, pseudonym Shufu), and his grandson Zhong Shou (Zhusan) inherited the family's medical tradition, and they were collectively known as the "Nanyuan Throat Specialists." Zheng Cheng Han authored another work in 1804 titled Hou Bai Chan Wei in one volume, which was published alongside the original. Additionally, Fang Chengpei's Zhonglou Yuyao Sequel in two volumes was also included in the publication. This book is a renowned work in the field of throat diseases and has been reprinted numerous times.
The first volume of the book contains 17 sections, beginning with eight essays such as "Discourse on Throat Diseases," which serve as a general introduction to throat diseases, discussing causes, symptoms, treatments, and incurable conditions. It also lists 36 types of throat wind, categorizing various conditions of the throat, mouth, teeth, lips, and tongue under the term "wind," including ulcerative gingivitis and white throat (diphtheria). The treatment primarily involves modifications of the Zidi Decoction. The second volume, "Wind Needle Techniques," covers needle manipulation techniques, tonification and drainage methods, contraindications, and the fourteen meridian points commonly used in throat medicine. The book provides detailed information on the diagnosis, treatment, and precautions for diphtheria, with the primary prescription being the Yin-Nourishing and Lung-Clearing Decoction, which is considered the ancestral formula for modern anti-diphtheria mixtures.
