The needle passes through the skin, subcutaneous tissue, through the lateral aspect of the rectus femoris muscle, and reaches the vastus medius muscle. The superficial layer contains branches of the lateral femoral cutaneous nerve; the deep layer contains branches of the lateral femoral circumflex artery, vein and femoral nerve.
