bubble_chart Etymology

"Tongzi" (瞳子), eye; "liao" (髎), bone hole, refers to the acupoint. The point is located beside the eye, hence the name. It is also known as "Qianguan" (前關) because it is located in front of jaw joint.

On face, beside outer canthus of eye, at the lateral border of orbit. When eye is closed, it is at the end of outer canthus crease.

  • Muscles: orbicularis oculi; deep layer, temporalis muscle.
  • Nerves: zygomaticofacial nerve, zygomaticotemporal nerve, temporal and frontal branch of facial nerve.
  • Vessels: zygomaticoorbital artery and vein.

Insert horizontally backward (Taiyang, EX-HN 5) to a depth of 0.5 to 1 cun. Moxibustion is not applied.

Dispel wind, discharge heat, improve vision.

  • Classical: glaucoma, difficulty seeing distant objects, redness and pain in outer canthus, photophobia, eye nebula, eye itching, headache, eyelid twitching.
  • Modern: conjunctivitis, keratitis, retinitis, night blindness, optic atrophy, facial paralysis, facial muscle spasms, trigeminal neuralgia.
