Triple energizer accumulates heat, pathogenic fire runs rampant, hence Skullcap Root is used to purge lung fire in the upper energizer, Coptis Rhizome to purge spleen fire in the middle energizer, Phellodendron Bark to purge kidney fire in the lower energizer, and Gardenia to thoroughly purge the fire of the triple energizer, expelling it through the bladder. When yang is exuberant, yin declines; when fire is excessive, water declines. Therefore, medicines of great bitterness and cold (Great Cold, the 24th solar term) are used to suppress yang and support yin, to purge the excessive fire and rescue the nearly depleted water. However, these should not be lightly administered unless there is true heat.
