This product is the tuberous root of the climbing herbaceous vine Ampelopsis japonica of the Vitaceae family. It is primarily produced in North China, East China, and Central South China. The roots are dug up in spring and autumn, the seedlings are removed, washed, sliced diagonally, and dried in the sun.

This product is bitter and cold in nature, with the ability to clear heat and remove toxins, disperse swelling, and resolve abscesses.

  • It can be used alone or in combination with Lonicera, Forsythia, and Dandelion for decoction and internal use to treat abscesses and sores. It can also be ground into powder with Rice Bean and applied externally with egg white. For abscesses that have already suppurated, internal use can promote pus expulsion. For sores and ulcers that do not heal after ulceration, it can be used with common bletilla pseudobulb and Chinese starjasmine stem, ground into powder and applied externally to promote tissue regeneration and wound healing, such as in the Japanese Ampelopsis Root Powder.
  • For scalds or burns caused by hot water or fire, it can be used alone or in equal parts with Sanguisorba, ground into powder and applied externally.
