common name | Giant Typhonium Rhizome |
alias | Giant Typhonium Tuber |
This product is the tuber of the perennial herbaceous plant Typhonium giganteum Engl. (Typhonium giganteum Engl.) of the Arisaema family. It is produced in Henan, Gansu, Hubei, and other regions. It is harvested in autumn, with the residual stems, fibrous roots, and outer skin removed; fumigated with sulfur 1-2 times, and then dried. Alternatively, it can be processed with alum and fresh ginger rhizome before being sliced.
Giant typhonium rhizome was first recorded in Bielu. However, according to research, the materia medica of various dynasties recorded the tuberous root of Aconitum coreanum (Aconitum coreanum (Levl) Raip) of the Japanese buttercup herb family, known as Korean monkshood root. As for when the Giant Typhonium Tuber of the Arisaema family was included in medicinal records, further research is needed. Both types of giant typhonium rhizome can dispel wind, resolve phlegm, and relieve spasms, but the Giant Typhonium Tuber is less toxic and can also remove toxins and disperse nodules. It is now widely used as the standard product of giant typhonium rhizome; whereas Korean monkshood root is highly toxic, with effects more focused on dispersing cold-dampness and relieving pain, and is now less commonly used.
