This product is the dry above-ground part of Grass of Common KnotGrass (Polygonum aviculare L.). Harvest when the leaves are lush in summer, remove roots and impurities, and dry in the sun.
[Character]
The stem of this product is cylindrical and slightly flat, with branches, 15-40cm long and 0.2-0.3cm in diameter. The surface is gray-green or brown-red, with fine and slightly raised vertical lines; the nodes are slightly enlarged, with light brown membrane-like stipules, and the internodes are about 3cm long; they are hard and easy to break, and the pith of the cross section is white. The leaves are alternate, nearly sessile or with short stalks. The leaves are often shed or shriveled or broken. The intact ones are lanceolate after being flattened, with entire edges, and both sides are brown-green or gray-green. Odorless, slightly bitter taste.

[Modern Pharmacology]
The whole plant contains Grass of Common KnotGrass glycoside, Daimyo Oak Bark glycoside, d-Black Catechu essence, Nutgall acid, coffee bean acid, oxalic acid, silicic acid, chlorogenic acid, p-coumaric acid, mucilage, glucose, fructose and sucrose. . Distribution of silicic acid: 1.6% in leaves, 0.6% in stems, and 0.4% in roots (if it is used as a silicate drug, it can be collected during the entire growth period; if it is used as a flavonoid drug, it should be collected when it first blooms).
Pharmacological effects
- Diuretic effect: Experiments have proven that Grass of Common KnotGrass has diuretic effect. After decoction 20g/kg is given to rats loaded with saline, urine output, sodium and potassium excretion increase, especially potassium excretion. Its ash content also has the same effect, so its diuretic effect is believed to be mainly due to potassium salts, and some people think it is due to the flavonoid glycosides contained in it.
- Antihypertensive effect: Intravenous injection of water and alcohol extract of Grass of Common KnotGrass has antihypertensive effect on cats, rabbits and dogs.
- Effect on uterus and hemostasis: Water and alcohol extracts of Grass of Common KnotGrass can accelerate blood coagulation and increase uterus tension. It can be used as a hemostatic agent for uterus bleeding after late abortion and childbirth.
- Antibacterial effect: 1:10 Grass of Common KnotGrass leach solution has an inhibitory effect on certain fungi in the test tube, but has a weak inhibitory effect on bacteria.
- Other effects: It can enhance the amplitude of respiratory movement and pulmonary ventilation, has grade I astringent effect, and can be used as trauma medicine. Toxicity
- Grass of Common KnotGrass is toxic as pasture and can cause dermatitis and gastrointestinal disorders in horses and sheep. Pigeons are most sensitive to the toxic effects of this plant.
- The minimum lethal dose for cats and rabbits is 20 ml/kg for oral infusion (10-20%) or decoction (1:40), and 2 ml/kg for intravenous water extract (1:50).
