1. Used for ascendant hyperactivity of liver yang, dizziness, and dizzy vision. This product is a mineral-based medicine, heavy and sinking, and is particularly effective in suppressing and calming liver yang. It has a bitter and cold nature and also clears and reduces liver fire. Therefore, it is used to treat cases of ascendant hyperactivity of liver yang and excessive liver fire, often combined with Abalone Shell, Prunella, Achyranthes Root, etc., such as in Hematite Decoction. For cases of liver-kidney yin deficiency and ascendant hyperactivity of liver yang, it is often combined with Tortoise Carapace, oyster shell, Peony Root, and other yin-nourishing and yang-subduing medicinals, such as in the Liver-Sedating and Wind-Extinguishing Decoction.
2. Used for vomiting, hiccups, belching, and other symptoms. Hematite, being heavy and sinking, can descend the counterflow of stomach qi and stop vomiting, hiccups, and belching. Therefore, it is used to treat persistent vomiting, hiccups, and belching due to stomach qi ascending counterflow, often combined with Inula Flower, Pinellia, Fresh Ginger Rhizome, and other medicinals, such as in the Inula and Hematite Decoction.
3. Used for qi counterflow and wheezing. This product, being heavy and sinking, can also descend the counterflow of lung qi and relieve wheezing. For treating asthma with audible wheezing and difficulty lying down, it can be used alone by grinding it into powder and taking it with rice vinegar. For treating deficiency-type dyspnea due to lung and kidney insufficiency and deficiency of both yin and yang, it is often combined with Tangshen, Asiatic Cornelian Cherry Fruit, walnut kernel, and other medicinals, such as in the Ginseng and Hematite Qi-Settling Decoction.
4. Used for hematemesis and epistaxis due to blood heat, menorrhagia, and metrostaxis. This product is bitter and cold, enters the heart and liver blood, and has the effect of cooling blood and stopping bleeding. Therefore, it is used to treat hematemesis and epistaxis due to reckless blood heat, often combined with Peony Root, Bamboo Shavings, Great Burdock Achene, etc., such as in the Cold-Descending Decoction. For treating menorrhagia and metrostaxis due to blood heat, it is often combined with limonite, red halloysite, Trogopterus Dung, etc., such as in the Soul-Shaking Pill.
