bubble_chart Efficacy

Strengthen the spleen and soothe the liver, ascending lucidity and descending turbidity.

bubble_chart Indications

The constraining of liver qi leads to wood depression overcoming earth, causing the qi of the spleen and stomach to fail in ascending and descending, resulting in chest fullness and frequent shortness of breath.

bubble_chart Formula Principles

The spleen governs the ascent of the clear, thus transporting body fluids upward; the stomach governs the descent of the turbid, thus transporting waste downward. White Atractylodes Rhizome and Astragalus Root are the primary herbs for tonifying the spleen and stomach. When combined with Cinnamon Twig and Bupleurum, they assist in the ascent of spleen qi; when combined with Dried Tangerine Peel and Magnolia Bark, they assist in the descent of stomach qi. With the clear ascending and the turbid descending, fullness and discomfort naturally dissipate, eliminating the need to specifically regulate liver qi, as liver qi will regulate itself. Moreover, Cinnamon Twig, Bupleurum, and Germinated Barley are all excellent for soothing the liver. Peony Root is used to astringe the qi of the liver and gallbladder, preventing its ascent, and also to counteract the heat of Astragalus Root and Cinnamon Twig. Fresh Ginger Rhizome, with its pungent and warming properties, aids the qi transformation of the liver and spleen. When these herbs are used together, they have the effect of strengthening the spleen and soothing the liver.
