[Documentation]

Anti-diphtheria bacilli "Fujian Chinese medicine" 1964(5):1-12

Experimental results show that this prescription has high bacteriostatic and bactericidal abilities against diphtheria bacteria, and also has a high neutralizing effect on diphtheria bacteria in vitro, destroying both the toxicity and the antigenicity of the toxin. Among them, the drugs with stronger antibacterial power are Unprocessed Rehmannia Root, Paewan, and Liquorice Root; while those with stronger ability to neutralize toxicity include Scrophularia Root, Ophiopogon Tuber, and Fritillaria Bulb; Peony Root has obvious effects in both aspects; and Mentha has obvious effects in both aspects. All effects are poor. Antibacterial power and toxin-neutralizing power appear to be two independent properties. If any medicine is subtracted from the original prescription, its antibacterial effect is lower than that of the original prescription, but its ability to neutralize toxicity has no significant effect.

[Modern application]

Modern methods are often used to treat diphtheria, acute tonsillitis, acute and chronic pharyngitis, nasopharyngeal carcinoma and other patients with yin deficiency dryness-heat.
