bubble_chart Formula Principles
Deficiency of qi and blood leads to the heart losing its nourishment, and the blood circulation becoming sluggish, hence severe palpitation and an irregular, intermittent pulse. The treatment should focus on enriching yin and replenishing blood, tonifying qi to restore the pulse. In the formula, a large amount of Prepared Liquorice Root is used, which is sweet and warm, to tonify qi and strengthen the middle, serving as the main herb. It is assisted by Tangshen and Chinese Date to tonify qi and benefit the stomach, which are the foundation for generating the pulse. Donkey-hide Gelatin, Unprocessed Rehmannia Root, Ophiopogon Tuber, and Hemp Seed are used to nourish heart blood and heart yin, thereby enriching the blood vessels. Cinnamon Twig and Fresh Ginger Rhizome, along with wine, are warm and dispersing, which can unblock heart yang and facilitate the heart vessels. The combination of these medicinals is based on the principle that the body's yin and blood rely on yang qi for movement, with a focus on tonifying heart qi and unblocking heart yang. The unblocking of heart yang and the restoration of heart qi are essential prerequisites for resolving the irregular, intermittent pulse. This is combined with herbs that tonify blood and enrich yin to fill the blood vessels, ensuring that yang qi has something to anchor to and does not float away, thereby naturally stopping palpitations and restoring the pulse to normal. Hence, it is also known as "Pulse-Restoring Decoction." As for the syndrome of deficiency fatigue and lung atrophy, it is also caused by yin deficiency and blood deficiency. This formula functions to nourish blood and enrich yin, making it suitable for treating such conditions as well.
