Li Shi-zhen said: The liver is connected to the eyes. When gallbladder bile decreases, the vision becomes dim. The eyes are the external manifestation of the liver and the essence of the gallbladder. Therefore, all gallbladders can treat eye diseases, either by topical application or oral intake. It is said that diseases have internal and external aspects, and their treatments differ. Internal diseases, once manifested, cannot be cured without oral medication. External diseases, once formed, cannot be resolved without topical treatment. When internal diseases first arise, controlling the flow is not as effective as blocking the source, and pruning the branches is not as effective as removing the root. It has never been seen that internal diseases are cured without medication. Once external ophthalmopathy has formed, it is like dirt that needs to be washed or a mirror that needs to be polished. It has never been seen that external diseases are resolved without topical treatment. If internal visual obstruction is treated with external application without oral medication, it may instead provoke inflammation and disturb the blood and qi, causing harm rather than benefit. If external ophthalmopathy has already formed, even if medication is taken, it will not prevent its development or growth, and the underlying issue will remain unresolved. Only by attacking both internally and externally can the full efficacy be achieved.
