  1. Zhao Yide said: I have studied materia medica, Anemarrhena, Caoguo, Dichroa, Liquorice Root, Smoked Plum, Areca Seed, Pangolin Scales, all are said to treat malaria. When combined into a formula, Anemarrhena, being cold in nature, enters the Foot Yangming channel to treat excessive heat, causing it to retreat to the Taiyin. Caoguo, with its warm and dry properties, treats the excessive cold in the Foot Taiyin, causing it to retreat to the Yangming. When these two channels are harmonized, there will be no yin-yang interlocking disorder. This is the sovereign medicinal. Dichroa primarily treats malaria with alternating chills and fever, and expels phlegm accumulation in the chest. This is the minister medicinal. Liquorice Root harmonizes the various medicinals, Smoked Plum eliminates phlegm, Areca Seed dispels phlegm stagnation and breaks stagnant qi. These are the assistant medicinals. Pangolin Scales, which dwell in mountain caves and enter water, thus traverses yin and yang, penetrating the channels and collaterals to break the evil of summerheat accumulation. This is the guiding medicinal. Only those with phlegm accumulation in the spleen and stomach will find it effective.
  2. Li Shicai said: Dichroa, when used raw and in large amounts, induces vomiting. When used with Liquorice Root, it will also cause vomiting. However, if it is wine-soaked and thoroughly fried, using just a small amount can achieve remarkable results without causing vomiting. People are often misled by the saying that the elderly and those with chronic illnesses should avoid it, causing this good medicine to be doubted and serious illnesses difficult to cure. Isn't that a pity?
  3. Li Shizhen said: Dichroa Twig and Leaf, which expels phlegm and prevents malaria attacks, should be used after dispersing exterior pathogens and lifting the yang aspect. When used appropriately, with Liquorice Root it induces vomiting, with Rhubarb Rhizoma it promotes bowel movement, with Smoked Plum and Pangolin Scales it enters the liver, with wheat and Bamboo Leaf it enters the heart, with Glutinous Sorghum and Ephedra it enters the lungs, with Fossil Bone and Aconite Lateral Root it enters the kidneys, and with Caoguo and Areca Seed it enters the spleen. Essentially, no malaria occurs without phlegm, and the efficacy of this substance lies in expelling phlegm and water. Dichroa Twig and Leaf are the sprouts of Dichroa. Daytime attacks belong to the yang aspect, nighttime attacks to the yin aspect.
