bubble_chart Formula Principles
This formula was originally designed for pediatric use, as children's original qi is not yet fully developed, their resistance to disease is weak, and they are prone to external pathogens. Due to insufficient healthy qi, it is difficult to expel the pathogens, hence the combination of tonifying qi and exterior-releasing medicinals is used to support the healthy qi while expelling the pathogens. In the formula, Ginseng tonifies qi and supports the healthy qi; Qiang and Du are used together, excelling in inducing sweating to release the exterior, dispelling wind, and removing dampness. When combined with Ginseng, they enhance the ability to expel pathogens and strengthen the exterior-releasing effect. Sichuan Lovage Rhizome is pungent, warm, and aromatic, assisting Qiang and Du in inducing sweating to expel exterior pathogens, while also invigorating blood and removing stagnation, thereby enhancing the effect of diffusing impediment to relieve pain. Bupleurum releases the flesh and reduces fever. Platycodon Root, Submature Bitter Orange, Peucedanum, and Poria promote the descent of lung qi, regulate qi, and resolve phlegm. Liquorice Root harmonizes the various medicinals, and the addition of a small amount of Fresh Ginger Rhizome and Mentha enhances the pungent dispersing and exterior-releasing effects. This formula is one of the representative formulas of the "boating-up-the-stream therapy" method and can also be used for dysentery and diarrhea caused by pathogens sinking from the exterior to the interior.
