1. Liu Zonghou said: Coughing due to fatigue is not primarily a cough. Therefore, this decoction and the Golden Chamber Kidney Qi Pill are examples of Shaoyin medicine.
2. Renzhai Zhizhi said: The lungs expel qi, and the kidneys absorb qi. The lungs are the master of qi, and the kidneys are the root of qi. Whenever there is a severe cough, and one feels qi rising from below the navel, this is due to kidney deficiency and the inability to return qi to its origin. One should use Rehmannia pills and An Shen pills, and not merely focus on the lungs. This is the principle of supplementing the child when the mother is deficient.
3. Yiguan said: Among the five elements, only the lungs and kidneys are such that when the mother is ill, the child is affected by evil. Why is this? The lungs govern qi. When the lungs are hot, the qi is scorched and rises, unable to descend and generate the kidneys, thus the kidneys are injured. When the kidneys are injured, the lungs become even more ill. The mother's uterus stores, and cryptorchidism is the mother's womb. The qi of the lung metal in humans returns to the kidney water during sleep at night. Because the lungs are affected by the heart's fire evil, they seek to escape into the water below, but the kidney water is dry, and the fire has no place to reside, thus it rises again and causes illness.
