bubble_chart Formula Principles
Although the abscess has already formed pus, due to insufficient qi and blood, it lacks the strength to expel the pus outward, making it difficult for the sore surface to rupture. The treatment should focus on tonifying qi, promoting suppuration, and expelling pus. In the formula, Astragalus Root is used in its raw form to expel toxins and drain pus, while its roasted form only tonifies qi and lacks the ability to expel toxins, and may even exacerbate fire and toxins. Therefore, Astragalus Root must be used in its raw form, and a large dose of raw Astragalus Root is used as the monarch herb to tonify qi, expel toxins, and drain pus. It is assisted by Chinese Angelica and Sichuan Lovage Rhizome to nourish blood and promote blood circulation; pangolin scales and Gleditsia spine are used to disperse, unblock, soften hardness, and promote rupture, serving as minister herbs. Yellow wine is used to unblock meridians and promote blood stasis, aiding the medicinal effects as an assistant and guide. The combination of these herbs works together to expel toxins and rupture pus. Pus is formed due to the imbalance of qi and blood, and the putrefaction of stagnant heat. Therefore, the discharge of pus in conditions like Yongju allows the toxic qi to be expelled along with the pus, which is similar to the resolution of cold-damage disease exterior pattern through sweating and the resolution of fu-organ syndrome through purgation. If healthy qi is insufficient, not only will it fail to expel toxins and transform pus, but even if pus is present, it will not rupture quickly, even with the use of a knife or needle. After rupture, the pus will be thin and flow sluggishly, still requiring tonifying and expelling formulas to achieve thick and free-flowing pus. Therefore, in cases of Yongju sores and ulcers where pus is difficult to rupture or cannot transform toxins into pus, and where dissolution is ineffective and surgery is unsuitable, the use of this formula is most appropriate.
