Ren, male, worker, was hospitalized in the autumn of 1961 due to fever. The patient experienced chest fullness and vomiting, profuse sweating, high fever in the afternoon, severe diarrhea with over 10 bowel movements a day, and clear urine. After being treated with penicillin and other antibiotics, the frequency of diarrhea slightly decreased, but the fever persisted, with a body temperature still at 40°C. The pulse was wiry and rapid, at 140 beats per minute. According to Article 229 of the "Treatise on Cold Damage Diseases": "In cases of yangming disease with tidal fever, severe diarrhea, clear urine, and persistent chest and hypochondriac fullness, Minor Bupleurum Decoction should be administered." Minor Bupleurum Decoction (composed of Bupleurum, Skullcap Root, Ginseng, Prepared Liquorice Root, Fresh Ginger Rhizome, Chinese Date, and Pinellia) was prescribed. After one dose, the fever subsided and the body cooled. After two more doses, the diarrhea stopped, and all symptoms disappeared, leading to recovery.
