A study by Anhui Medical University showed that the pharmacological effects of Chinese materia medica Debark Peony Root are comparable to those of ginseng root, and in some aspects its functions are superior to ginseng root. …Scientific researchers conducted a comparative study on 27 pharmacological effects of these two Chinese materia medica. Among them, 17 were equally effective, 3 of Debark Peony Root deficient ginseng root were better than 7 of ginseng root... Debark Peony root and ginseng root have an effect on increasing the production of hemolysin antibodies and delayed allergic reactions inhibited by cyclic phosphate amine; they also enhance the phagocytosis of macrophages and the induction of interferon. In addition, Debark Peony Root also enhances the experimentally reduced thymocyte proliferation response and has a bidirectional regulating effect on the release of hydrogen peroxide from rat peritoneal macrophages induced by zymosan. In terms of clinical pharmacology, both Debark Peony Root and ginseng root have anti-stress, anti-fatigue, sedation, memory enhancement, regulation of neuroendocrine activity, anti-radiation and anti-hepatotoxicity, and regulation of cellular and humoral immunity. Ginseng root has advantages in regulating the function of heart blood vessels and regulating cell metabolic processes; while Debark Peony Root has effects that ginseng root does not have in terms of analgesia, improving sleep, and treating hepatitis B.
