[description]

A native of Kaocheng, Suizhou (now Lankao County, Henan) in the Jin Dynasty. He was fond of reading when he was young, loved to compose poems, had a bold personality, and was not particular about details. His family was a doctor, and he lived in Wanqiu, Chenzhou (now Huaiyang County, Henan). Later he lived in Hunyuan (now Hunyuan County, Shanxi Province) and studied medicine under Liu Congyi. He was deeply influenced by Liu Wan-su's theory that was popular at that time. Between Dading and Mingchang (1161-1195), he gradually formed his own unique medical theory. Famous for his superb medical skills. During the reign of Xingding (1217-1223), he was recruited to serve in Taiyiyuan. Later, due to disagreement with the medical style of the current doctors, he resigned soon and returned to his hometown Wanqiu to practice medicine. Zhang Boquan and others once studied medicine from him. Ma Zhiji (Jiuchou), a well-known scholar at that time, had a close relationship with him. He often discussed difficult medical issues with Ma Shi and Chang Zhongming (Yong Hui). Later, with their assistance, he wrote the book Rumen Shiqin in 1228. Among them, the first three volumes were written by Zhang himself, and the last twelve volumes were polished and compiled by Ma and Chang. The book reflects the characteristics of his academic thoughts.

The formation of Zhang Cong-zheng’s academic thoughts coincided with the rise of Liu Wan-su’s “cold and cool” theory. The basic idea of Liu Wan-su, the private scholar of Zhang family, tried to correct the shortcomings of traditional medicine by using warm tonic, and was the purpose of Zong Neijing and Nan Jing, as well as Zhongjing Khan and Tu , the following three methods, and established a theoretical doctrine centered on "theory of attacking evil".

After the birth of Zhang Cong-zheng's innovative theory, he made certain contributions to the prosperity and development of "Jin-Yuan Medicine" later on. After his study, it was passed down to Ma Zhiji, Chang Zhongming, Zhang Boquan and others, and it continued to spread and develop, forming the "Gongxia School", a major academic school of medicine in the Jin and Yuan Dynasties. It is said that Zhang Cong-zheng also wrote books such as Zhang's Experience Prescription and Disease caused by cold Heart Mirror, but unfortunately none of them have survived.
