[description]

Ge Hong was born in Jurong, Danyang (now Jurong County, Jiangsu Province) in the Eastern Jin Dynasty. He was originally from a bureaucratic family, but his family declined. He once joined the army, but later retired from official career and specialized in alchemy, medicine and writings. . Because he had a wide range of interests and was almost deficient in various fields of ancient natural sciences and social sciences, he became a naturalist and philosopher, especially in alchemy, chemistry, medicine, etc., with remarkable achievements. He was one of the most famous figures in this period. One of the representative medical scientists. The works he left behind: the main ones on medicine are Zhouzhou Beiji Fang; those on philosophy, alchemy, and health preservation are Baopuzi, which are divided into two parts, the inner part and the outer part. The former mainly discusses Alchemy, the latter is a philosophical work on ethics and morality.

Ge Hong He has read a lot of books, and his academic attitude is to learn from hundreds of schools of thought. He once said: "But if you read widely, you will recite and uphold all the books secretly, and you will be regular meridian." There are nearly ten thousand volumes of short and miscellaneous articles written by hundreds of historians, and some of them are still quoted in writing." (Baopuzi ‧Autobiography) This attitude of his is even more obvious in medicine. He attaches great importance to the valuable experience of the doctors of his predecessors. The so-called "reading the tombs exhaustively, using his spare time to write and comprehensive skills" Count. ProvinceZhongjing, Wuhua...nearly a thousand volumes." On the other hand, he also conducted in-depth investigations so that he could "know more and understand the important things" and "know well and make good choices". He clearly stated that "all subsequent works are better than the previous ones" and "although there are many ancient books, they may not be perfect. They should be regarded as a mountain of scholars, so that the author can hunt among them" (Baopuzi ‧Jun Shi). He also declared that "the world suffers from the high and low, the near and the distant, which is ancient and not modern. I am afraid that this book does not have the eyes of Huangdi, Cang Gong and Magpies, so it cannot be adopted. How can it be better?" (Preface by Zhouzhou Fang ). Indeed, there are very few expressions of reserved thoughts in Zhouzhou Fang. He attached great importance to practice. Not only did he personally practice the process of alchemy, he also made careful observations and personally treated various diseases. In this regard, he proposed that everything must be "visually inspected" and opposed "trusting the ears and doubting the eyes." This is also the main reason why he has achieved so many achievements in medical practice that his predecessors have not achieved and reached a certain height.

Ge Hong Regarding medical issues, he is not limited to simple prescriptions and single prescriptions to treat diseases. As a philosopher, he has viewed medicine from a philosophical and holistic perspective. They all have their own unique views and discussions on aspects such as the human body, diseases, treatment, prevention, etc.

Ge Hong believes that "wind-cold and summerheat dampness cannot harm a strong person" as to the causes of human disease. Defend each other, and no one can hurt you." (Baopuzi ‧Jiyan). This is a thorough discussion of the relationship between the human body's spirit and body and the dialectical relationship between disease onset. Zhouzhou Fang clearly stated that "distinguish the names of diseases and continue them by categories without confusing them" (Baopuzi ‧Miscellaneous Ying). This can only be achieved through in-depth specific practice and meticulous observation. It can be obtained on the basis of analysis and synthesis. He paid great attention to ordinary patients and remote mountainous areas, requiring a simple and cost-effective treatment formula, and clearly proposed the efficacy of this formula and the prognosis of the disease. Many formulas are followed by "tested", "good", "effective", "bad", etc. He abandoned the use of expensive medicines, large formulas, and for diseases caused by cold. He did not copy classical prescriptions such as Ephedra, Cinnamon Twig, Qinglong, Baihu, Sishun, and reversal of cold of limbs, but proposed four emergency and easily available remedies. Prescriptions and medicines, "There are many medicines that are easy to obtain. If you don't get them, you have to buy them. They are all cheap and available everywhere. They are also used for moxibustion...Everyone can understand their use by looking at them." The medical ethos he advocated also had a great influence on later generations.
