Kou Zong-shi, a native of the Song Dynasty. Residence unknown. He is knowledgeable in medical science, especially in materia medica. He once held the position of "purchasing and identifying medicinal materials." During the Zhenghe period (1111-1117), he served as a medical officer and was awarded Tong Naoro. He is the author of Bencao Yanyi (his first work is "materia medica") in twenty volumes, published in the sixth year of Zhenghe (1116), and now exists in a revised version in the Song Dynasty. There are forty-two volumes of "materia medica" in the current "Tao Zang", which is the same book and different name of Bencao Yanyi.
