bubble_chart Description Wang Lun (1453–1510), courtesy name Ruyan and art name Jiezhai, was born into a bureaucratic family. His ancestors originally resided in Tongchuan, Shaanxi, and later moved to Cixi, Zhejiang during the Five Dynasties period. He passed the imperial examination in 1484 and held various official positions, including Vice Minister of the Ministry of Rites, Provincial Administration Commissioner of Guangdong, Right Provincial Administration Commissioner of Huguang, Vice Censor-in-Chief, and Governor of Huguang. Due to his father's illness, he became skilled in medicine, and his elder brother, who was also a jinshi (metropolitan graduate), was knowledgeable in medicine as well. During his political career, Wang Lun consistently engaged in medical practice.
He authored Mingyi Zazhu in 6 volumes, Materia Medica Collection Essentials in 8 volumes, Medical Discussions and Q&A, Jiezhai's Medical Cases on Obstetrics, Jiezhai's Pediatric Medical Book, and others.
In medical theory, Wang Lun advocated for "focusing primarily on the Neijing while broadly studying the works of the four masters." He believed that the books of Zhang Zhongjing, Li Dongyuan, Liu Hejian, and Zhu Danxi "each elucidated a unique principle," and by extensively studying their teachings, "the completeness of medical knowledge could be achieved."
