"Xi" (膝), knee; "yan" (眼), eye. The depressions on both sides of patellar ligament at knee joint resemble eye sockets, and the acupoint is located above them, hence the name "Xiyan" (knee eye).

With knee flexed, the points are located in the depressions on both sides of patellar ligament. The medial depression is called
Neixiyan (EX-LE4, medial knee eye), and the lateral depression is called
Waixiyan (EX-LE5, lateral knee eye).

- Muscles: one finger-width medial and lateral to the patellar ligament.
- Vessels: arteriovenous network of knee joint.
- Nerve: superficially, infrapatellar branch of saphenous nerve and branches of lateral femoral cutaneous nerve; deeply, branches of the common tibiofibular nerve.
