"Zigong" (紫宮) refers to the Purple Palace, a star name in ancient Chinese astronomy, believed to be the seat of Heavenly Emperor. The acupoint is located near heart and is closely related to it, hence the name.

Located on the midline of chest, level with 2nd intercostal space, slightly below sternal angle.

  • Muscles: superficial fascia is thin, with almost no fat.
  • Nerve: medial branch of anterior cutaneous branch of second intercostal space.
  • Vessels: anterior perforating branches of the internal thoracic (mammary) artery and vein.

Subcutaneous insertion 0.3~0.5 cun. Moxibustion with moxa cone 3 to 5 times, moxibustion with moxa stick for 15 to 20 minutes.

Soothe chest, decend counterflow.

  • Classical: chest and hypochondriac pain, irritability, inability to eat, vomiting, asthma, pharyngitis.
  • Modern: pharyngitis, tracheitis, costochondritis.

  • Cough and irritability: Zigong (CV19), Yutang (CV18), Taixi (KI3).
  • Fullness and distension in chest and ribs: Zigong (CV19), Zhongting (CV16), Yongquan (KI1).
