"Yang" (陽) refers to lateral side; "Yangjiao" (交), connect or cross. Foot shaoyang gallbladder meridian connects here to foot taiyang bladder meridian, hence it is also called "Bieyang" (別陽). "Bie" (別) means to separate or depart.

On the lateral aspect of lower leg, 7 cun above the tip of external malleolus, in the depression posterior to fibula.
- Zhenjiu Jiayi Jing: "7 cun above external malleolus, obliquely connecting to three yang muscles," meaning it is obliquely oriented toward taiyang meridian side.
