"Tian" (天), upper part; "you" (牖), window, referring to ear. The acupoint is located near ear, in the upper part of neck, hence the name.

Located on the lateral side of the neck, at the posterior border of the sternocleidomastoid muscle, directly below the posterior border of the mastoid process of the temporal bone, level with the angle of the mandible, at the midpoint of the line connecting Tianrong (SI17) and Tianzhu (BL10).
  • Zhenjiu Jiayi Jing: "Between neck tendons, above supraclavicular fossa, posterior to Tianrong (SI17), anterior to Tianzhu (BL10), below Wangu (GB12), above hairline";
  • Leijing Tuyi adds: "One cun above, adjacent to back of ear";
  • Xunjing Kaoxue Bian: "On the fleshy prominence at the end of mandible";
  • Zhenjiu Jicheng: "One cun below Fengchi (GB20), slightly lateral".

  • Muscles: sternocleidomastoid, splenius capitis and cervical muscles, semispinalis capitis and cervical muscles.
  • Nerve: lesser occipital nerve.
  • Vessel: occipital artery.

Perpendicular insertion 0.5~1 cun. Moxibustion with moxa cone 1 to 3 times, moxibustion with moxa stick for 5 to 15 minutes.

Clear head wind, improve vision and hearing.

  • Classical: headache, dizziness, facial swelling, sudden deafness, blurred vision, pharyngitis, nasal congestion, epistaxis, scrofula, eye pain, disturbed dreams at night, shoulder and back pain, stiff neck.

  • Stiff neck with inability to turn: Tianyou (TE16), Houxi (SI3).
  • Swollen face: Tianyou (TE16), Aixi, Fengchi (GB20).
  • Sore throat: Tianyou (TE16), Hegu (LI4).
  • Pain and difficulty moving lower back and spine: Fengchi (GB20), Tianyou (TE16), Hegu (LI4), Kunlun (BL60).
