[Origin]

The ears are for listening, and the palace is in the middle. The acupoint is in the center in front of the tragus, hence the name.

• Zhenjiu Jiayi Jing: "Beads in the ear...";
• Nan Jing Ding De-yong Note: "Beads in the ear..." "That's right";

• Zhenjiu Jicheng: "On the inner surface of the flesh peak in front of the ear".

[Anatomy]

• Muscle: temporalis membrane. (The deep layer is the cartilage outside the external auditory canal)
• Nerves: facial nerve, auriculotemporal nerve.
• Vessels: branches of superficial temporal artery and vein.

[Manipulation]

Open the mouth slightly to move the mandibular head forward to avoid blood vessels, and perform perpendicular insertion or oblique insertion slightly downward by 0.5 to 1.5 inches. If the needle is inserted 2.5 inches deep forward and downward (contralateral masseter muscle) at an 85° angle, it can cross the posterior edge of the mandibular capitellum and the front of the styloid process, and reach between the posterior pharyngeal wall and the anterior edge of the 1st to 2nd cervical vertebrae. Direct moxibustion and warm moxibustion with moxa sticks are prohibited for 10 to 15 minutes.

It soothes the ears and calms the mind.

• Classical: epilepsy, shock, deafness, tinnitus, ear itching, blindness, ear discharge, toothache, abdominal distension and fullness, arm pain, acne, dizziness, muteness.
• Modern: deafness and dumbness, vertigo (Meniere's sign), otitis media, otitis externa, facial nerve palsy, mandibular arthritis.
